About Neon Colors

Neon colors are highly saturated, luminous hues that appear to emit light. The term comes from neon gas signs — glass tubes filled with gases like neon (red-orange glow), argon (blue), or krypton (green) that produce vivid light when electrified. In digital design, neon colors are recreated using near-maximum saturation and brightness values.

True neon colors on a screen sit at the edges of the sRGB color space: maximum saturation, full brightness. The most recognizable neon shades are neon green (#39FF14), neon pink (#FF6EC7), and neon cyan (#00FFFF). These appear fluorescent because monitors can produce more light than paper can reflect.

Using Neon Colors in Design

  • Dark backgrounds: Neon colors only pop against black or very dark backgrounds. On white they look flat.
  • Accents, not base: Use sparingly as CTA buttons, highlights, or borders. Full neon palettes are overwhelming.
  • Glow effect: Add a box-shadow or text-shadow in the same color at 30–50% opacity to simulate real neon glow.
  • Cyberpunk & gaming aesthetics: Neon is the signature look for dark UI, gaming interfaces, and futuristic branding.
