About Flat UI Colors

What are flat UI colors?

Flat UI colors emerged around 2013 alongside flat design — a reaction against skeuomorphic drop shadows and gradients. The original 20-color set was created by Designmodo and became one of the most widely copied design resources on the internet.

Why these colors work

Each color is carefully desaturated to be vivid but not harsh. They pair well together because they share similar saturation and lightness levels — the deep version of each hue makes a strong pair with its lighter counterpart (Turquoise + Green Sea, Alizarin + Pomegranate).

Extended palettes

The regional palettes (American, British, Australian, etc.) were added in Flat UI Colors 2.0. Each set has its own mood — the Australian palette leans vivid and playful while the Swedish palette emphasizes deep, muted blues.
