About WCAG contrast requirements

WCAG 2.1 defines minimum contrast ratios for readable text. AA is the standard legal requirement in most jurisdictions. AAA is the enhanced level, recommended for body text and critical interfaces.

WCAG AA

Normal text: 4.5:1 minimum

Large text: 3:1 minimum

(Large = 18pt / 14pt bold)

WCAG AAA

Normal text: 7:1 minimum

Large text: 4.5:1 minimum

(Enhanced accessibility)

The contrast ratio is computed using the WCAG relative luminance formula, which accounts for the non-linear perception of brightness in the human visual system.
